Offering a paint your own pottery, mobile ceramic studio service as well as creating commissioned artwork.

We work with both children and adults to design and decorate ceramic items of their choice, allowing them to get creative in an arty way.

As we work on a mobile basis, we can come to your home, work place, school, playgroup, day centre, café or wherever you want us to be throughout Essex and Suffolk.

We are fully insured and hold enhanced criminal record bureau certificate as well as working to the highest levels of health and safety with no lead or cadmium being used in any of our products.

What is Ceramic Painting?

Customers are invited to choose a piece of blank pottery (known as bisque) from a selection (such as varying styles of plates, bowls, mugs, moneyboxes, ornaments etc).  We provide brushes, paints, sponges, stamps and our tuition to get you started. Once you've finished painting, we take the piece away to glaze and fire it n our kiln at our workshop and return your masterpiece to you within a week, commissioned pieces may take a little longer to return.

Where did the Ceramic Painting idea come from?

Ceramic painting parties/cafes have become quite a popular phenomenon in Britain over the last couple of years.  The first Hobby Ceramic Studio was opened in America in the 1940s, and nowadays in America it is said to be a very popular ‘stress-busting’ pastime for many senior executives and celebrities.  The concept of ceramic painting has now materialised in Britain in the form of Ceramic cafes and studios and (like us) mobile ceramic painting businesses.

 Once you have washed your hands, they need to be free of grease, this builds up on hands throughout the day, to ensure even glazing.

Once you have selected the item you wish to paint the first thing to do is to wipe it with a damp sponge - this removes any dust which will prevent even paint application.

The more coats of paint you apply the stronger the resulting colour, we recommend a minimum of three coats of paint with four or five coats for lighter colours. Unpainted areas come out creamy-white after glazing but as a rule the more colour you use the more striking the result, i.e. don’t leave too much unpainted.

For lettering; use the thinnest brush and slightly watered down paint, or tell us what you would like and let us write it for you.

If you are going to use a stamp, applying the paint to the stamp with a brush works best and re-apply between each image.

Pencil markings burn off in the kiln so you can draw or trace a design first if you wish. We have some designs on clay carbon paper which you can use if you wish to.
